Ever since I saw the scene in I Claudius where the empress Livia
whispers on her deathbed, "Claudius, make me a goddess," I knew
that this was a wish as old as womankind. I didn't want to become a
goddess, exactly, but I wanted to pay tribute to the goddesses in our
lives, in our world, the women who have gone before. This is my
personal altar honoring the goddess in every woman. Not exactly
pagan, or Wiccan, but in that spirit.
I chose a Latin-American folk-art theme, specifically from colonial
Mexico. The colors are traditional, from the Mexican flag, red, yellow
and the green closer to teal than in the original. I used white metal
accents and punched tin. The embellishments include letter beads
spelling iconic words of the goddesses, milagros (small Mexican
prayer charms seeking "miracles") loteria cards, and bottle caps with
goddess images and trinkets suspended in resin.
or collected from other women. The other drawers contained trinkets that had special meaning for me and a
mini-altered book on the goddess theme. The door opens to a shrine or altar to the goddess, using bisque doll
arms outstretched in supplication and benediction. The heart in various representations is a repeated motif.
I burn votive candles on the metal disc on the top, and arrange the doors and drawers to suit my mood or a special
prayer. It has become more and more special to me over time, and is a true object of devotion in my house.
In different themes, this could serve as an example of the construction of a personal shrine of your own, a home
altar, whether traditional, Wiccan, pagan, or in any other spirit, to an icon that has meaning for you.
