My big brother -- we're not really related, but he's the big brother I never had
-- was owned by a Maine Coon cat named Beauregard. Those who live with
cats know the cats own them, not the other way around. Beau was a beautiful
big boy with attitude to burn. At twelve years, Beau met a sad end due to a
neighbor's Rottweiler. This custom pet memorial shrine or altar was made in
his memory. If you are interested in a personalized memorial for a loved one,
or your cat or dog, or a memorial gift for someone who has suffered a loss,
consider this idea for animal or human.
I used a color scheme that I knew would work in my brother's home and that
reflected Beau's personality: a vibrant, Chinese red with pearlized finish as
base, with accents in blue, teal, green and gold. I used extensive
embellishments: pieces of a collage with medieval and Renaissance imagery
as background; funny little feet of stacked washers and bottle caps with wire
and loop wrappings, like Beau's own fluffy feet, bead-embellished toppers like
his ears, many dangling wired beads and charms, and extensive use of
micro-beads for glamor and glitter. Beau would have found it barely good
enough for him. He had an outsized ego to go with his personality. This cat
memorial was very feline, very much Beau.
my brother's Moon Child zodiac sign. The sides had large rusted figures -- a fish (Beau's favorite food) and an Indian
Trickster (Beau's personality). On the back I placed more bottle caps, some with photographs of Beau and/or beads or
other decorations embedded in resin. The drawer opens to display more embellishment, including an image of the Eiffel
Tower to reflect Beau's French-Cajun roots, and contained a custom miniature altered book, with each page containing a
letter of Beau's full name and kitty images in a coordinated color scheme, with more photos.
This was my most complex shrine or altar to date, and took quite some time. I was very happy with it once completed, and
so was my brother. I have made other personalized shrines and altars for gifts for the loss of a loved family member of any
species.
