This was one of my most enjoyable projects. A delightful
young couple planning a special and unique ceremony
wanted a shrine to form part of the ceremony and reception.
They completely understood my idea of "participatory art"
and wanted to extend it to the completion of the shrine. My
commission was to create a partially-completed shrine and
supply the remaining embellishments separately, all tailored
to their theme and colors in an "altar starter kit." In this way,
the couple and their guests could complete it as they wished,
so at the end the couple had a communal art work created
for them by the people who shared their joyous day!
so creative, and intensely meaningful to the recipient. I also thought the guests would have a good time!
The wedding was held in a beautiful meadow in Oregon, with a long celebration full of unique touches.
The colors were gold and tones of crimson. The theme of the wedding, and the long celebration that
followed (sort of a cross between Burning Man and a Renaissance Fair, plus touches that were all the
couple's own) was an interesting mix of cultures: Indian (the country, not Native American), Asian, Pacific
Islander, and "just a little bit of 19th Century America." I had just the right box. Using the colors in their
invitation and a bit of collage, I got right to work on it. The couple has promised me photos of the
completed shrine after their honeymoon, and, hopefully, some photos of their guests taking part in its
creation! I will add them as soon as I receive them. This personal altar for the home of the wedding
couple will, I hope, be a source of happy memories.
